Message:  It is wonderful to have come across your website, for the first time - having
owned my beautiful Norwegian Fjord for seven years, and being interested to
 trace his history.
Living in south west Cornwall, there are very few of the breed, hence the
stunning beauty of Piran, (Sandvika Serenade), is remarked upon wherever we
ride together. Piran is now 26 years of age, yet remarkably, like a 5 year old,
in conformation, strength, stamina, and tremendous enthusiasm for life in
general. In his hey day, he was reknowned for his excellence in the show
jumping arena as also eventing world - pipping everyone to the post to the
extent where other competitors dreaded him turning up at an event - knowing
theur chances of winning would be lessened!!
His show name - Sandvika Serenade, represents the part of Norway from which he
heralded, and Serenade- because this horse actually 'talks' to you!
I have never witnessed anything like this before in over thirty years of living
with horses. It is both hilarious, and wonderful as a true means of
communication between man and horse. He shouts for his breakfast each morning,
and will 'tell you off' if he is annoyed, through a deeep throaty huffing and
puffing, accompanied by a shaking of his head.
His strength and stamina was a t first quite disconcerting, when he first came
to me, and in fact it took me two years to get him to walk, each time we rode
on a grasss verge- his enthusiasm for being out and about occasioanlly getting
the better of him! Even now, I find it a feat of my own strength to hold him,
whilst cantering, and particularly jumping fences, or obstacles whilst out
hacking. Twenty six, going on five!!
I have been told that this breed lives well into old age - thirties even, if
they ovbiously, are well looked after, as Piran is- his favourite Christmas
treat is carrots, dipped in treacle!!
Piran shares his life with a little pure Exmoor mare named 'Moo' - a rescue
filly , who came to me via the RSPCA, after a press release of her terrrible
sufferring in the hands of an indiscriminate dealer. Out of three hundred
applicants, Moo 'chose' to live with Piran and myself, and after an inittial
period of Piran bossing her about, it now is the other way around!
Overall, the greatest contribution this beautiul horse provides, is my
happiness, and enjoyment at seeing his own, in living.
Piran never ceases to amaze me - most certainly in his state of 'old age'.
He remains forever young, which is surely a true tribute to this wonderful
 breed.
If anyone is able to help with furhter details relating to his ancestry, I
 would greatly appreciate it
I wish you every continued success in all your ventures, and long live the
 Fjord!

The Website is looking more and more gorgeous. After the disappointments of
not finding Ausdan Opal a husband in Spring 2001 (Foot and Mouth etc) we put
her in foal to a very splendid registered chestnut Arabian. In june last year
Opal had the most beautiful colt foal, Max, who has Ffjord colouring, but is
lighter in build, and has stunning paces (Tail up!)and has happily inherited
Opals temperament, very gentle and quick to learn. Can we register him with
you as a part-bred? If so would you let me know how I go about this? Whilst
writing, I dont think Opal has a new 'Passport' - can you tell me what to do
about this also. Look forward to hearing from you.
 Keep up the good work

their time with us unstintingly. They moved some of their wonderful herd of
mares and foals into the school in advance of our visit to the stud so that we
could see for ourselves how calm and uncomplicated Fjords really are. We
wandered amongst twenty or thirty of them without once being barged, nipped or
trodden on - the mares were relaxed and the foals inquisitive. Having

Message:  Well done to you for a lovely website. I have taken a big interest in fjords
for many years and remember visiting the Breed Show in Dorset where I counted
41 fjord horses all in one place. It was a dream to see. Can someone tell me
if the lovely fjord called Froy is Ausdan Froy. If it is, why don't you use his
full name? If it is Ausdan Froy I remember him in Sussex several years ago. I
know there is a part bred who looks pure called Froy. It is very confusing to
people like me who follow the breed.
Other than that I endorse this as a great website. Keep up the good work.

I once had a fjord with a mane like your one. There were no black hairs just
flaxen ones. He was quite handsome. He originally came from Scotland in Britain
and he was sold to us by a lady in Kent. Sadly he died when he was only six.
The vet said he had a heredetery problem in his spine. His back started to go
and in the end he was an odd shape. I have a section D welsh pony now but I
look at this website when I can because I still love the fjord ponies. I hope

cried for my Daddy. Then I looked at your website again with new eyes. I am
proud to be half Norwegian. I am proud to have the fjord horse as part of my

Message:  Thank you Gemma for your kind comments. Yes indeed Maple Fylla IS the dam of
Ffinlo whose correct title is AUSDAN FFINLO. We entirely agree that names
should not be altered for the obvious reason of security but for other reasons
too, but we have no connection with the Scottish site and therefore do not
have authority over what they do. The correct titles of the two stallions are
 AUSDAN FFINLO and AUSDAN MAGNUS.
The Ausdan Stud are the largest stud in the United Kingdom and their experience
certainly shows in the fact, as you say, that 50% of the fjords standing in
Scotland are Ausdan born and bred. The Hon Mrs Janet Kidd was a good mentor and
her vast experience of fjords are reaping rewards for us all today. She was a
good judge of horses and most of her top fjords were sent to the Ausdan Stud
 when she retired from breeding.
We will inform the stud that you will be contacting them. Please do e-mail us

Message:  I would like to congratulate you on a 1st class site with informative pages. I
have just as they say gone on line and have been looking at fjord horse
websites as I own Marle, a 10 year old fjord mare. I was looking for a husband
for her and noticed Ffinlo and Magnus standing in Scotland. On studying the
breeding and time scale I notice they are Ausdan Stud fjords. I have visited
the Ausdan Stud a number of years ago and also I went to a show where Maple
Fylla , is it the dam of Ffinlo because if it is I saw Ffinlo as a foal in
Luton, was being driven by Lyn Moran in a very impressive display with a hell
of a good commentry. Can you tell me why have the stallions prefix names been
dropped?I thought that names were not allowed to be changed.I belong to another
society and they do not allow name changes at any price. I then came to your
website and I have decided to use Nikk Halsnes at the Ausdan Stud. If the
Ausdan stud stallions form 50 per cent of the stallions on hire for service in
Scotland then the Ausdan stud knows what a good stallion is and is the best
port of 1st call. I will contact them in May and thank you for a good
introduction to websites. I will now try and see if I can go to your links

Message:  THANK YOU FREDA FOR YOUR KIND COMMENTS ABOUT OUR WEBSITE.
As you brought the subject up and we have had a few e-mails asking about the
 history, here is a very brief overview;

Arpanet, which was commenced by the US Defense Department in 1969 was the fore-
runner of what we have today. It was developed for research into networking. A
system was then devised for allowing people involved in the research programme
to put forward their ideas and comments and this resulted in the developement
 of the RFC.
A 'request for comments' or RFC was first made out in April 1969 and is
popularly accepted as the date the internet commenced.
People who were non-military were allowed to use this system in the 1970's and
it was in 1972 that connections outside of the States commenced. However, the
internet as we know it was a long way off. There was no World Wide Web and no
e-mail as we understand it today.
Around the middle of the 1980's various services started to appear and in 1984
domain names were introduced. E-mail had been in existence before then but it
 was not standardised.
The World Wide Web (www) was invented by a phisicist named Tim Berners-Lee in
1989. He worked for CERN which was the European Particle Physics Laboratory
and he was keen to find a way for physicists to view and share each others
research information. So,'www' was born. In those days however it was just for
text. It was not until the emergence of a browser named NCSA Mosaic that
graphics were possible. At that period in time the internet was brought closer
to the man in the street and in 1993 the boom began as people could from then
dial in to the internet from home computers. This was achieved by using a modem
to connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) who then onward connected them
to the world wide web. Prior to this the only computers which were in everyday
use were owned by large organisations who could afford to hire the cables
necessary to transfer data between each other.

We have come a long way in a relatively short time and those of us who use this
method of communications would now probably wonder where we would be without it.

We would not have a network of fjord enthusiasts whom we communicate with and
whom we share ideas with so easily and cheaply. We should be grateful to those
early researchers every time we put this great technology into use.

To all who read this - HAPPY FJORDING.

Message:  Friday Fiona Nicholson wrote the following about the Registry in Norway: “…..
which is known to all as Norskfjordhestlag”.
That for one thing is not correct.
The name of the national Fjordhorse organisation in Norway is ‘Norges
Fjordhestlag’, and this association has entrusted the studbook keeping to
another Norwegian institution, called ‘Norsk Hestesenter’.
A registrar should certainly know that!

What I wrote Monday is 100 percent true.
However it is interesting that Fiona Nicholson is so worried about ‘truth’. In
my archives I have documentation that the following could be seen at the
 Scottish site some time ago:
“At a recent meeting in Norway, the three Fjord horse organisations, Norges
Fjordhestlag, Norsk Hestesenters and Fjord Horse International, officially
recognised the Fjord Horse Registry of Scotland as an International
organisation working in the UK for the benefit of the breed. The FHRS considers
being recognised by the ‘mother country’ as a great honour indeed.”

Nice story, ……. But the truth is that there never was such a meeting about
recognition and that Norway never recognised anything Scottish. When Norway
realised that such a false statement was published, they had to write to
Scotland in order to have it removed from the Scottish site.
And that is also 100 percent true!

with Norway. It is time we knew the true state of affairs. Who is approved

Message:  Martina Benson, - I hope you read this, since I have a message for you:

Enjoy your stay in Norway, it is a wonderful country with some very nice
people, and if you buy a fjord horse (not a pony, please) I absolutely
recommend you to register it by the Fjord Horse National Studbook of Great
Britain. That will cause no trouble at all between Norway and Denmark.

Norway is the mother country, but Denmark was the next country to ‘adopt’ the
fjord horse. In 1931 we established a breeding and evaluation programme and in
1941 our first studbook (based on evaluations) was published. Last year we
celebrated the Jubilee in many ways. In August we arranged the Nordic
Championship for fjord riders and drivers together with a regional show.
Altogether 171 fjord horses (from Norway, Sweden, Germany and of course
Denmark) participated and together they had more than 600 entries.
Today more than 10.000 mares have been evaluated during the 70 years, and in
September last year we had a Jubilee evaluation with stallions, mares, geldings
and foals (more than 100 fjord horses were evaluated). We had a show with
almost 100 participating fjord horses. We had an international evening with 125
guests at a reception, and the next evening we had the Jubilee dinner with
almost 350 participating fjord lovers. Among the many guests coming from abroad
was the Norwegian Fjord Horse International chairman, the Norwegian national
chairman, the Norwegian editor and many other celebrities.

So you can see that we have the very best relations to the mother country
 Norway.
But you seem to have got something wrong in your contribution to this guest
book earlier this month. Norway has no fjord horse associations/studbooks
affiliated, and Norway has not recognised any of the European fjord horse
 associations.
The Fjord Horse National Studbook of Great Britain was formed in 1984 and most
of their fjord horses were imported from Denmark. So it was quite natural that
they asked us helping with evaluating the fjord horses suitability to enter the
 registers.
Your idea about a ‘Scottish branch’ being affiliated to Norway is not correct
and I can assure you that a ‘Scottish branch’ has nothing to do with the Fjord
Horse National Studbook of Great Britain either.

The best wishes for you fjord horse search in Norway this summer.

Message:  Thank you Christine for your complimentary message. Yes indeed there were two
stallions at the Maple Stud. The first was Maple Viking who was by Torgul (1st
class) out of Conny Osterkaer (2nd class). Viking was a small stallion only
standing at 13.1 hands. His hindquarters were somewhat weak and today it is
doubtful if he would be considered to be of sufficient quality to be allowed to
pass on his genes to the next generation. Viking was never put through
materialprove tests in Denmark and consequently he was never presented for
Karing which is where he would have been evaluated. He was never performance
tested in Britain before being allowed to serve pure bred mares. We in Britain
at that time were not used to routine examination of breeding stock and there
was no society in existence to offer guidance. Today, our stallions have to be
performance tested before being permitted to stand at stud. If they fail,
they are not granted a breeding licence.
The Maple Stud then imported Klaus, known in Britain as Maple Klaus. He was
evaluated in Denmark, the procedure which they call 'Karing'. He was graded
2nd class in 1978 and was granted a breeding licence. Klaus was a good sized
stallion standing at 14.1 hands and he was kind and steady in nature. Both his
sire Lyngbrix and dam Ditte were graded in 1st class. Klaus was a prolific
sire and he was responsible for many offspring over the years. His influence
can be seen today and he has left us with several fine sons.
We hope this is of use to your daughter and if you would like further
 information please do e.mail us.

Message:  To Anne & Alison.

On the matter of prefixes, we of course agree. A prefix should accompany the
horse throughout its life. A breeder quite rightly then gains recognition for
producing that animal. If it is of sufficient quality to be approved to
produce the next generation, then the breeder deserves a little bit of
recognition. That is the main reason prefixes exist.
Anne, re your question, we are sorry to say we do not know the answer. Perhaps
if you contact the owner of the two fjord stallions, they may be able to give
 you an answer.
We assure you we will always endeavour to proudly display a person's or stud's
prefix. Thank you for pointing out the fact of the missing prefix for Ausdan
 Magnus and Ausdan Ffinlo.

From:Alison Maynard
Date:Wed May 2 22:08:24 2001

Message:  On the subject of prefixes, I agree with the last writer. A stud prefix should
always be used alongside the animals name. It is the only way for a breeder to
gain recognition for the animal he or she has bred. There is really no excuse
for not using a prefix if it appears on the pedigree certificate. To do so is
to in effect change the representation of the name on the certificate.
On another subject, I saw a fjord in Exeter recently. I thought it was
lovely. Very classic head. Thaks for a wonderful visit.
 Yours
 A. Maynard
